Pore structure and its effect on acoustic velocity and permeability of reef-shoal carbonates in the Tarim Basin, Northwest China

Abstract Experiment and numerical simulation are integrated to investigate the effects of pore structure on physical properties in reef-shoal carbonate samples from Tarim Basin. The results show three correlation trends between parameters properties, which closely depend type. acoustic velocity fractured-vuggy type (Structure I) is mainly affected by porosity shape, whereas fractured tight types (Structures II III) controlled connection fractures, respectively. For permeability, main controlling factor Structures I III porosity, that Structure volume fraction fractures. From classification, combining significantly improves predictions confirming classification should be prioritized determining factors critical for improvement permeability predictions. These allow better exploration development reservoirs using seismic log data.
